ICASP stands for the Illinois Chinese Adopted Siblings
Program. Chinese American adopted children from Central Illinois and
adjoining areas will be paired with a ※Big Sib§, an Asian American
undergraduate student at UIUC. Together, the ※siblings§ will spend the day
taking part in Chinese cultural immersion activities, playing fun traditional
games, eating authentic foods and most of all, having fun and making new
friends!
What can we expect out of ICASP?
ICASP provides unique and informative programs for both
parents and children:
Children
The children program often includes cultural activities such
as a Chinese fan dance, martial arts demonstrations, Chinese yo-yo lessons,
language lessons, arts and crafts and a viewing of relevant kid-friendly
videos.
Parents
There will also be a simultaneous program located in the
same building for parents while the children play. In previous years, we have
featured various seminars on topics that range from Chinese culture and
holidays, cross-cultural adoption issues, to Chinese cooking tutorials!
Last Spring 2006, our guest speaker was Jean MacLeod, a
speaker from the Our Chinese Daughters Foundation, a non-profit organization
that specializes in family-friendly cultural education for adopted Chinese
children. ICASP has also featured child psychologists, adoption agency workers,
and adopted Asian American children on a Q&A panel.
We are constantly looking for more help for next year! Please contact Christina at icasp.uiuc@gmail.com for more information on being a Big sib or if you want to help out with behind-the-scenes stuff =).
